The active ingredient in coffee is caffeine. Caffeine is absorbed into the bloodstream 45 minutes after the initial intake. Once absorbed into the bloodstream caffeine can impact your body in the way that it creates a sense of wakefulness and alertness.


Most Americans drink on average more than 200 milligrams of caffeine daily. That is equal to 2 cups of coffee or 6 cans of soda. Most of these Americans are getting their daily intake from at least one cup of coffee. Check with your own doctor to find out what daily caffeine levels are healthy for you.


Different brewing techniques, beans and the amount you’re brewing all affect how much caffeine is truly in your morning cup. However, there are estimates so that you don’t ever accidentally over do it.

Below are general ranges of caffeine present

in different teas as well as in a cup of coffee (8 oz cup):

drip or filter

115-175 mg

with an average of 145 mg

french press or plunger

80-135 mg

with an average of 107.5 mg


64-272 mg

with an average of 200 mg


160-240 mg

with an average of 200 mg
